Harvey Milk Society

The Harvey Milk Society1 is the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender (GLBT) and Straight Allies organization of the LBJ School of Public Affairs.  Our mission is to provide support, education, and advocacy to and for the GLBT community within the LBJ School, at the University of Texas, and within the greater community at large.  Past events and activities have included:

  • Brown-Bag Speakers on a number of issues relevant to the GLBT community at the University of Texas, in the state, and nation-wide
  • Involvement in the campaign to defeat Proposition 2 (a proposition on last November’s ballot to outlaw marriage for gays and lesbians in the Texas Bill of Rights)
  • Social events, ranging from happy hours, to movie screenings, to Texas Roller Derby

Our next meeting will be Wednesday, October 3, 1:15-1:55pm in the 3rd floor student lounge

1: Harvey Milk, our namesake, was the first openly gay person elected to any substantial public office in the United States.  He served on the San Francisco Board of Commissioners from 1977 until his tragic death at the hands of one of his fellow commissioners on November 27th, 1978.
